Diwali is called the Festival of Lights and is celebrated to honour Sri Ram. It is believed that on this day Sri Ram returned to his kingdom after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demon king, Ravan.
To join in with the celebrations, we decided to make and do lots of fun things. First of all, we made Diwali cards using a coloured card and collage materials. Then we had a go at making Diwa lamps using salt dough. Miss Roshni taught us how to shape the dough and use the dough knives to make patterns. Once it was dry, we used poster paint to paint it and added glitter to make it sparkle!
We also learnt about the many different types of sweets Hindus around the world eat. We tried to make our own, by following a special recipe to make Coconut ladoos (a small spherical ball filled with coconut and condensed milk.
During our storytime sessions this week, we also listened to and watched the Diwali story and learnt even more about Sri Ram, Laxman, Sita and Hanuman. The stories were really interesting! We learnt so much from them.
